For this project, I worked together with three other students to create an interactive IoT installation for children, inspired by the natural history museum Kina in Ghent. The goal was to create an engaging installation for children to learn more about the subjects that are seen in the museum.
We created a physical world map combined with a digital quiz displayed on a screen. Players first have to find a camouflaged animal hidden within an image and then answer a multiple-choice question to identify which animal they found. Different continents can be selected through the physical installation, allowing players to explore animals from different parts of the world.
The installation combines several hardware components to create a more immersive experience. A Raspberry Pi runs the application and communicates with an Arduino that controls LED strips and physical buttons. A MakeyMakey was used for joystick navigation and continent selection. The LEDs provide visual feedback based on the selected continent, while physical buttons can trigger hints, sounds and selections.
Working on this project with a team of four gave me experience with IoT development, physical interaction, hardware communication, real-time applications and designing a full experience for a real world environment. Combining the physical map, lighting, sounds, buttons and digital quiz allowed us to create a complete interactive installation rather than just a traditional web application.
The installation is still available to visit during info days at Arteveldehogeschool, near Fablab at Campus Kantienberg Ghent.
